“Did you make this?” The warm voice in the vicinity of her left ear sent a tremor along Alyssa’s neck, the appreciative whisper raising goose bumps along the top of her arms. “Cold?” Trent asked with a raised brow, as if he already knew the answer.

“Just fine, thanks, and no, I didn’t make it.” Alyssa poured glasses of lemonade for the workers on lunch break and kept her gaze from meeting his. “Mom did. Taste good?”

“Perfect. I love carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I actually had it for the first time in the Army.” He licked his fork appreciatively and sighed disappointment that the cake was gone. “It’s been an ongoing love affair ever since.”

“Would you like another piece?” A part of her wanted to move him down the line, but a bigger part longed for him to stay right there, talk with her. Tease her. Maybe…

Do. Not. Go. There.

He scanned the number of people with obvious regret. “Naw, that would be greedy. Did I tell you I’m closing on Julie and Keith Wasserman’s house next week?”

The tray of full glasses left her temporarily out of diversionary tactics. She chanced a glance up, realized it was probably not a good idea to meet Trent’s gaze when he looked so wonderfully sun-rumpled and handsome, despite the grubby clothes and bits of roofing dotting his hair. Not obeying the inner caution that warned her to resist, she reached up and brushed debris from the back of his hair, away from the food and drinks. “You’re a mess.”

Her touch brought a smile to his eyes. “But I clean up nice.”

There was no denying that. “You do.” Obviously a change of subject was in order. “Their house is on McCallister, right? The big gold colonial?”

“With the red shutters and window boxes. Yup. It was love at first sight.”

“First the cake, now the house.” Alyssa smiled a welcome and nodded toward the tray of drinks as a couple of guys coated in drywall dust approached. Obviously the inside crew.

Trent leaned a smidge closer. “Old habits die hard it seems.”

Her breath caught. She knew what he meant, exactly what he meant. They used to laugh about falling in love right off, knowing the world would scoff at a pair of teens who believed such nonsense. But Trent’s tone of voice said it might not have been all that ridiculous.

And yet it was, so she patently ignored the hint of enticement. He stepped back as if sensing her quandary, but not minding nearly as much as she did. “I’ll see you later when I drop Jay off.”

Alyssa nodded, purposely not prolonging the conversation by saying she was working. He’d figure that out when he got to the house. Prolonging her time with him didn’t bode well for either of them. The heightened interest in his eyes pushed her to tread slowly. She’d had to bare her soul on some important issues already. She had no intention of making it a clean sweep, airing her linens for the world to see.
